The STEMventures Scholars Service Project started in 2015. Our mission is to get kids excited to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics by leading an after-school program at the Curley K-8 Center in Jamaica Plain. We look to provide engaging sessions each week that are fun, varied, and educational, showing kids how exciting STEM can be. We planned and delivered sessions at the Curley School throughout the fall of 2015 and the spring of 2016, with some of our membership changing due to co-op and added members.
Service Project Details:
Participants can expect to be part of weekly meetings (to plan our sessions and discuss overall goals) and the weekly sessions themselves, which will take place at the Curley School. At Curley, the participants will work with a group of third to fifth graders, which can range in size from around six kids to up to eighteen, depending on the week.
Job Description:
We are looking for a minimum of three students to join the project. We are seeking students who preferably have some experience volunteering in the field of STEM education, and who have a diversity of majors and interest areas. It would be great for us to have, for example, two different types of engineers and two different types of scientists. Most importantly, those who join the project should have an enthusiasm for STEM education and enjoy working with kids.
Timeline and Commitment Details:
The commitment is around 4 hours per week. Weekly planning meetings should be around an hour, and can be scheduled according to participants’ schedules. Last year, they took place on Sunday mornings. Sessions at Curley will be taking place on weekdays from 3:30 – 5 pm. Participants should plan on departing around 3 pm and returning around 5:30 pm (we take the Orange Line to get there). Extra individual time each week might be needed to finish planning lesson aspects and acquiring supplies.
Why You Should Join!
STEMventures is a very rewarding project to be a part of. The project is absolutely a product of student effort; students plan, prep and deliver each lesson themselves. This gives students a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the semester. Working with the kids and getting to know them is a lot of fun too!
