Scholars Climate Change Dialogue November 12, 2013 | faculty connections, intellectual life, Stormy weather, University Scholars Typhoon Haiyan This year, the University Scholars will be participating in a Dialogue of Civilizations to India to study the Science and Policy of Climate Change with Professor Auroop Ganguly of the Department of Civil Engineering. During our time in India, we will study not only climate change phenomena and their interactions with natural and built environments (with a particular focus on coastal communities) but also the contours of the social, political, and economic debates that structure the abilities of human beings to forestall, mitigate, and adapt to these profound changes. The landfall of the most powerful typhoon in human history in the Phillipines, which has already resulted in the loss of thousands of human lives and catastrophic infrastructure damages, makes the relevance and importance of this Dialogue even more apparent. As severe weather events become more frequent and extreme, the world is going to need leaders with vision, compassion, capacity, and expertise from a wide variety of fields to collaborate. This class will model this type of cooperation, bringing together students from across the university to work on this global challenge. The priority deadline for applications is November 15th.
