The Division of Student Life is pleased to announce the availability of several scholarship opportunities that recognize the contributions of our undergraduate student leaders. Scholarship awards range from $300-$5000, for first-year students through graduating seniors.
General Requirements for All Scholarships:
- Full-time, undergraduate student
- Must be in good academic standing
- Must be in good judicial standing
Important:
- Some scholarships require demonstrated financial need determined by FAFSA (U.S. Citizens and Eligible Non-U.S. Citizens Only)
- International students who are not eligible to receive federal student aid are invited to apply to the following scholarships:
- Clara and Joseph Ford Scholarship
- Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarships
- Karen T. Rigg Shining Torch Scholarship
- Richard Cardinal Cushing Award
How to Apply
Submit the online application with supporting documents by 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. In addition to the online application, all credentials (recommendation letter and essays) MUST be received by the deadline for scholarship consideration.
- When starting your application, you will have the option to create a username and password. This will allow you to save your work and come back to your application when you are ready to complete and submit.
- We encourage you to share the description and criteria of the scholarship/s with the Northeastern faculty or staff member recommending you. Your recommendation should address your qualifications for the specific scholarship, and allow the committee making the decision to gain better insight into your eligibility. Students should upload letters of recommendation directly through the application form.
It is the student’s responsibility to confirm their application is complete for the selection process.

Scholarship Descriptions and Requirements
Charles Havice Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory of Charles Havice, Dean of Chapel. It recognizes the contributions of active participants in student activities who have proven leadership ability.
Scholarship Requirements
- Must demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA (U.S. Citizens and Eligible Non-U.S. Citizens Only)
Clara and Joseph Ford Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes the contributions of students who demonstrate good citizenship and embody leadership qualities. Recipients are students who are active participants in student activities, have “demonstrated a democratic and tolerant spirit,” and who are well disposed toward people of all creeds and races.
Scholarship Requirements
- Open to students graduating in 2024, regardless of graduation month
Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarships
The Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarship is named after this Northeastern alumnus and crew member aboard the Challenger space shuttle. Recipients must demonstrate the perseverance, integrity, spirit and pride, which Mr. Jarvis exemplified so well.
Scholarship Requirements
- Must be a third-year student or higher
- Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
Joseph Spear Scholarship
Recipients of the Joseph Spear Scholarship must be enrolled in the College of Engineering and have demonstrated good citizenship and exemplary leadership abilities through their involvement in student activities.
Scholarship Requirements
- Must be a College of Engineering student
- Must be active in a student organization
- Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Must demonstrate financial need as determined by FAFSA (U.S. Citizens and Eligible Non-U.S. Citizens Only)
Karen T. Rigg Shining Torch Scholarship
This scholarship honors the contributions of Karen T. Rigg, former Northeastern Vice President for Student Affairs. It recognizes students who are a shining example within their student organization through their enthusiasm and positive attitude.
Scholarship Requirements
- Must be a first- or second-year student
- Must be active in a student organization
- Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
Matthew Shepard and Morris S. Kay Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory of Matthew Shepard, a gay youth whose 1998 death was the result of a brutal hate crime. It recognizes students who are actively working for gay, lesbian, and LGBTQA justice issues or other social justice issues.

Richard Cardinal Cushing Award
This scholarship was established in 1978 through the generosity of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. Income from the award’s endowment is awarded annually to one or more students who embody the principles of equality and justice and who, through their work on campus, have become positive forces for religious understanding.
Scholarship Requirements
- Must be a second-year student or higher
- Must have a record that exemplifies overall good campus citizenship
Thomas I. Atkins Social Justice Scholarship
This scholarship was established to honor Thomas I. Atkins, the first African-American city councilor of Boston. It recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership on behalf of social justice issues.

William H. Wildes Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established as the result of a bequest received in 2011 from the Rev. William H. Wildes. Students of any faith or spirituality will “embody a spiritually healthy life and through their work and personal example, help to advance spiritual understanding and cooperation at Northeastern.”

- Must have a record that exemplifies overall good campus citizenship
