Bali: Poverty, Development, and Immigration

Northeastern students will spend the first week in Ubud, Bali in a cultural immersion program, where they will experience Bali’s unique art, music, spiritual and political culture. They will then spend three days in homestays in the village of Sudaji, site of an innovative eco-friendly community model of cultural preservation. Afterwards, we will move to the Northern Balinese city of Singaraja where Northeastern students and their Balinese peers from Ganesha University will participate in a four week workshop on social entrepreneurship. At the end of the four-week training in Singaraja, students’ project proposals will be presented to local organizations and their partners who will choose one or two of the projects that could be implemented successfully in Singaraja and the surrounding communities. The ultimate goal is to empower both Balinese and Northeastern students to identify creative solutions to pressing problems and to offer fresh new ideas for local organizations.

Bumi Sehat
Bumi Sehat is a foundation that has a mission of reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality and to support the health and wise development of communities. Toward this goal, they provide general health services, emergency care, prenatal, postpartum, birth services and breastfeeding support, in addition to education and environmental programs. The Founder, Ibu Robyn, was recognized in 2011 as CNN’s Hero of the Year.

Mitra Bali
Mitra Bali has been actively participating in Bali’s economic and social development by working to empower a large group of handicraft producers. They are involved in assisting marginalized craft producers to understand and develop a fair trade model between the artisans and shop owners.

Ikang Papa
Ikang Papa Foundation was created as a home for orphans who are poor and have disabilities. The foundation runs both a orphanage and a school for young Balinese with physical and mental disabilities.

IDEP Foundation
IDEP is a local Indonesian NGO based in Bali – Indonesia, founded in 1999, that develops and delivers training, community programs and media related to sustainable development through Permaculture, and Community-based Disaster Management.

Bali Global Institute
Bali Institute for Global Renewal (BIGR) is the first global learning organization based in Bali that explores cultural immersion, service learning and deep dialogue to empower students, groups and organizations in their quest to make a difference in the world. BIGR includes a consortium of universities, international organizations, NGOs, thought leaders and consultants who promote a sustainable, humane and culturally-diverse life for all.

SMA Negeri Bali Mandara
SMA Negeri Bali Mandara is a state school supported by the Government of Bali Province, with the mission to nurture the students to be the future leaders of Bali. All of their students are underprivileged children aged 15-18 who have been awarded 3 years scholarship for education and boarding facilities. Their programs cover not only academic and non-academic activities, but also leadership and entrepreneurship. Their curriculum focuses not only on local issues, but with an aim to helping their students enter the global stage.
