Dr Paul GALVIN was awarded his PhD in 1995 and joined the Tyndall National Institute (then NMRC), in 2000 where he now leads the Life Sciences Interface Group. Research within the Life Sciences Interface Group is focussed on exploiting the extensive design, fabrication and characterisation tools available in Tyndall, for applications related to health and environment. Within his role as leader of the Life Sciences Interface Group in Tyndall, he has facilitated the development of new collaborative research programmes through engagement with senior representatives of leading medical device companies. Dr Galvin initiated, wrote and coordinated a number of large international multidisciplinary research projects such as CF-CHIP (EC FP5 programme – €2.3 million) and SNiP2CHIP (EC FP6 programme – €3.2 million). He was one of the founding members of Nano2Life, the European Network of Excellence (NoE) on Nanobiotechnology. In June 2011, he chaired the Organising Committee for the NanoBioEurope 2011 conference in Cork (Ireland), attended by delegates from 20 countries. To date, his research has been supported by EU FP5, 6 & 7 programmes in Health, NMP & ICT, as well as having projects funded by SFI, Enterprise Ireland and the Higher Education Authority, with awarded grants for his research in excess of €4.0 million. He has served as an expert reviewer for several funding agencies including EC FP5, FP6 and FP7 programmes. He has been a co-inventor on three filed patent applications, has over 60 international publications and has presented his research at international conferences around the world (including many invited papers and presentations) across a diversity of scientific disciplines.
