The fourth annual Black Leaders Accessing Consciousness through Knowledge and Latinx Accessing Their Intellect through Networking and EXchange (B.L.A.C.K./L.A.T.I.N.X.) Professional Development Immersion Experience will be taking place this upcoming spring semester from March 2, 2020 to March 4, 2020. Hosted by The Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute, and the Latinx Student Cultural Center, the B.L.A.C.K./L.A.T.I.N.X. program includes off-campus site visits, professional development workshops and career planning tailored to the emerging Black and Latinx professional interested in acquiring skills to navigate and move up in the workplace.

B.L.A.C.K. was launched in 2017 as a DO IT! Grant funded program with the John D. O’Bryant African American Institute to provide students of the African Diaspora with the opportunity to interact with some of Boston’s most prominent Black Professionals. Although Northeastern students are expected to go out on co-op very early in their professional careers, some students do not have the networks, background or experience to develop key relationships with employers that could lead to a fruitful co-op or career opportunity. The program addresses these needs by giving students the chance to advance their personal and professional mindset through networking and brand building. B.L.A.C.K. expanded to include L.A.T.I.N.X. in 2019 after recognizing that many Latinx students were already participating in the program because of the multiple identities that they hold.

Last year, 12 students were able to participate in the program and visit off-campus sites including Partners HealthCare, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and the Museum of Fine Arts. As a result of the experience, one student stated, “B.L.A.C.K./L.A.T.I.N.X. made me more aware that the challenges I face are not unique to me and there are people who have not only faced similar challenges but have also conquered them to become their best selves. It was also amazing to meet with people passionate about the next generation and willing to share their stories, unique perspectives on issues, and lessons they learned. Finally, I was able to build my network and improve my networking skills.”
