The Office of Student Affairs proudly administers the following scholarships opportunities which recognize the contributions of our student leaders on campus. 

For 2009, these scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.

How To Apply
To apply for the scholarships listed above, submit an application along with all supporting doucments by Friday, February 27, 2009 to the Office for Student Affairs at 104 Ell Hall.

Scholarship Descriptions and Requirements

 

The Thomas I Atkins Social Justice Scholarship
The Thomas I Atkins Social Justice Scholarship was established to honor Thomas I Atkins, the first African-American city councilor of Boston.  This scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated leadership on behalf of social justice issues.


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a freshman
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need


A total of three scholarships will be given to three eligible freshmen.

 

 The Matthew Shepard and Morris S. Kay Scholarship
The Matthew Shepard and Morris S. Kay Scholarship honors the memory of Matthew Shepard, a gay youth whose 1998 death was the result of a brutal hate crime.  This scholarship recognizes students who are actively working for gay, lesbian, and GLBT justice issues or other social justice issues.

 

In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must demonstrate financial need

 

A total of one scholarship will be given to an eligible student.

 

 The Karen T. Rigg Shining Torch Scholarship
The Karen Rigg Shining Torch Award honors the contributions of Karen Rigg, former Vice President for Student Affairs. This person is seen as a shining example within their student organization through their enthusiasm and positive attitude.


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a freshman or sophomore
• Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA


A total of four scholarships will be given to two eligible freshmen and two eligible sophomores.  Faculty and staff may also nominate eligible students.

 

 The Gilbert G. MacDonald Scholarship
The Gilbert G. MacDonald Scholarship honors the memory of Gilbert MacDonald, Vice President for Student Affairs.  This scholarship gives preference to the contributions of graduates of Needham High School and recognizes students who participate in athletics and/or are active participants in student activities.


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a middler or junior
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need

 

A total of one scholarship will be given to an eligible student.

 

 The Charles Havice Scholarship
The Charles Havice Scholarship honors the memory of Charles Havice, Dean of Chapel.  This scholarship recognizes the contributions of active participants in student activities who have proven leadership ability.


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a middler or junior
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need

 

A total of one scholarship will be given to an eligible student. 

 

 The Clara & Joseph Ford Scholarship
The Clara and Joseph Ford Scholarship recognizes the contributions of students who have demonstrated good citizenship and embody leadership qualities.  Recipients of this scholarship are students who are active participants in student activities and have “demonstrated a democratic and tolerant spirit and who are well disposed toward people of all creeds and races.”


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a junior
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must demonstrate financial need


A total of two scholarships will be given to two eligible juniors.

 

 The Joseph Spear Scholarship
The Joseph Spear Scholarship recognizes outstanding contributions to student activities by students enrolled in the College of Engineering.  Recipients of the Joseph Spear Scholarship must have demonstrated good citizenship and exemplary leadership abilities through their involvement in student activities.


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a junior
• Must be in the upper half of their class based on GPA, including over a 2.0 in Mathematics
• Must demonstrate financial need

 

A total of one scholarship will be given to an eligible student.

 

 The Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarship
The Greg Jarvis Memorial Scholarships are named after Greg Jarvis, Northeastern alumnus and crew member aboard the Challenger space shuttle.  Recipients of this scholarship must demonstrate the perseverance, integrity, spirit and pride, which Mr. Jarvis exemplified so well.


In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:


• Must be a senior
• Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA
• Must have served on a student organization executive board for a minimum of two semesters


A total of two scholarships will be given to two eligible seniors.

 

The Richard Cardinal Cushing Scholarship*
The Richard Cardinal Cushing Award was established in 1978 through the generosity of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. This scholarship is awarded annually to "a Catholic, a Protestant, and a Jewish student who embody the principles of brotherhood and justice and who, through their work on campus, have become positive forces for religious understanding."

 

In addition to meeting the general stipulations of the scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:

 

• Must be at least a sophomore undergraduate student
• Must be in good academic standing
• Must not be on any form of university probation
• Must have a record that exemplifies good campus citizenship

 

A total of up to three scholarships will be given to eligible students.
