Program Overview
In the fall of 2009, Northeastern University is launching a new PhD program in counseling psychology. The application deadline for the fall 2010 incoming class is January 5, 2010. This program is derived from the Combined School & Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program, which began in 1992.
The Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program is designed to prepare students for counseling psychology practice and research in a variety of settings with children, adolescents, families, and adults from culturally diverse backgrounds. The program is designed to meet both Massachusetts state licensure requirements and the accreditation requirements of the American Psychological Association. However, currently the new Counseling Psychology PhD Program is not accredited by APA, although we intend to pursue accreditation when eligible.
The program emphasizes:
- Multicultural competence
- Problem prevention and health promoting practices
- An ecological and community-oriented approach
- Expertise in outcome and counseling research
Our training goals are to produce graduates who demonstrate:
- Knowledge of the basic areas of psychology
- Competence in counseling practice
- Competence in research and scholarly activities
- A commitment to the profession of psychology
This program subscribes to a practitioner-scientist training model, emphasizing excellent practice, informed by research, and the generation and dissemination of scholarship. The course work, supervised fieldwork, and research are integrated throughout the program.
